Community Comes Together for No Single Use Plastic Campaign at Bukit Jelutong Ramadan Bazaar

A community-driven effort at Bukit Jelutong Ramadan Bazaar to reduce single-use plastics and promote eco-friendly habits.
Bukit Jelutong, Shah Alam — [7 March 2026]

The recent No Single Use Plastic (NSUP) Campaign held at the Bukit Jelutong Ramadan Bazaar on 7 March 2026 proved to be a lively and meaningful community initiative, successfully bringing together residents, students, and local authorities in raising awareness about the impact of single-use plastics on the environment. The programme was organised through a collaborative effort between the Bukit Jelutong Residents Association (BJRA), officers from MBSA, and students from the Kelab Rakan Alam Sekitar UiTM Student Chapter, reflecting a strong spirit of partnership and shared responsibility towards environmental sustainability.

As the bazaar buzzed with activity in the late afternoon with families preparing for their breaking of fast, volunteers from MBSA, UiTM students, and BJRA Executive Council members enthusiastically moved through the crowd engaging visitors in a fun and interactive environmental quiz. The initiative drew much interest, with many visitors eager to test their knowledge about plastic use and its long-term effects on the planet.

Participants were pleasantly surprised by some of the facts shared during the quiz. Many learnt, for example, that a single plastic bag can take between 450 to 1,000 years or more to decompose in landfill conditions. The quiz also encouraged self-reflection on personal “green habits”, prompting visitors to consider that avoiding plastic use altogether is far more effective in reducing pollution than relying solely on recycling.

To further support the campaign, visitors who participated were rewarded with environmentally friendly items such as reusable shopping bags and boxed personal cutlery sets, encouraging them to adopt more sustainable daily habits. Those who achieved full marks in the quiz were delighted to receive umbrellas as prizes, all generously sponsored by MBSA in support of the NSUP awareness drive.

The atmosphere throughout the event was warm and festive, almost carnival-like, with cheerful interactions between volunteers and the public. Laughter, curiosity, and meaningful conversations filled the bazaar as people shared their thoughts about protecting the environment while preparing for the holy month’s evening meal.

Most importantly, the programme succeeded in sparking greater awareness about the impact of single-use plastics and the role each individual can play in protecting the planet. The strong collaboration between MBSA, UiTM students, and the BJRA demonstrated how collective action at the community level can make environmental education both engaging and impactful.

With the positive response received from bazaar visitors, all parties involved expressed their commitment to continue strengthening such initiatives in the future. Together, they hope to further expand public awareness and encourage more residents to embrace the No Single Use Plastic movement — one small change at a time for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. 🌱♻️
